My love for interior design started in childhood, moving frequently due to my dad's military career. Each new home was a chance to get creative—whether rearranging furniture or even making "wallpaper" out of A4 paper! Instead of TV, I spent hours drawing, sewing, and crafting. Before pursuing interior design, I worked as a hairdresser for 10 years, specializing in styling and extensions. That experience taught me attention to detail and how to work with individual styles, skills I now apply to my design work. Creativity has always been at the heart of everything I do.
Design trends evolve, but I believe in creating timeless, functional spaces that transcend passing fads. My approach focuses on incorporating what clients already own—whether it’s reupholstering a favorite chair or refinishing a sentimental piece. I design with the people who live in the space in mind, ensuring their personalities and stories shine through. By honouring meaningful pieces, the spaces feel layered and personal, reflecting both timelessness and individuality. It’s about blending what’s lasting with what’s uniquely theirs.
Homewares are essential in interior design because they add personality and transform a space. Like fashion accessories, they can change the mood of a room depending on how they’re styled. Items like cushions, throws, and decorative pieces are also great for seasonal updates or whenever you need a fresh look. They’re the finishing touches that make a house feel like home.
When selecting pieces for the store, I focus on finding unique, quirky, or vintage items from around the world. These pieces bring character and history to a space. I also believe in mixing high and low, proving that great design and quality can be achieved at any price point.
For me, it’s all about the small details that make a space feel warm and inviting. Whether it’s the texture of a vase, the patina on a vintage bowl, or the curve of a candlestick, these subtle touches add depth and character.
When curating products for Gray & Co., I look for pieces that stand alone and tell a story. Each item is carefully selected to be special, unique, and timeless. I want customers to find pieces that resonate with them, sparking a connection and reflecting the individuality that great design embodies.
I’m excited to see color making a comeback in design, but in a refined, muted way. Carefully chosen tones can transform a space by adding warmth, depth, and subtle sophistication. It’s not about bold statements but finding the right shades that elevate a room without overwhelming it. These softer hues create a serene yet vibrant atmosphere—timeless and contemporary. It’s a trend I’m fully embracing.
Interior design, at its core, is a service—it’s about creating a space that reflects and enhances the individual tastes and lifestyles of my clients, not about showcasing my own aesthetic. That said, there are definitely clients who prefer to step aside and give me full creative reign, which is always a privilege.
To ensure we stay true to each client’s vision, I start every project with a very in-depth questionnaire that covers everything from their personal style to how they live and use their space. This process helps me understand the nuances of their preferences, which becomes the foundation for every design decision moving forward. Even when clients give us full freedom, we always make sure they feel heard and respected. At the end of the day, we’re designing for them—not just with them, but for them.
For me, "trend" often feels too tied to others’ opinions, and that’s not how I approach design. Interiors are deeply personal—it’s about what resonates with you, not what's popular. If you love something, embrace it, and if your taste changes, that’s totally fine!
That’s why second-hand marketplaces are so wonderful. As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another’s treasure.” Design is about finding what speaks to you in the moment, and if it shifts over time, that's part of the journey. Embrace what you love, and let go of what no longer brings joy.
